Civil War Opening Credits: Motion Graphics Type@Cooper
This video is my final motion design project developed during the "Movable Type: Motion for Designers & Typographers" course at Cooper Union in Fall 2024. The core objective was to create a compelling film title sequence, applying foundational motion design principles and advanced After Effects techniques. For the final assignment, I chose to reinterpret the 2024 A24 film "Civil War" through the lens of the True Crime genre.
The film "Civil War" depicts a dystopian, splintered United States under a dictatorship, documented by a group of journalists. The creative challenge was to capture the film's intense atmosphere and narrative themes using the distinct visual language of True Crime. This required crafting a title sequence that felt unsettling, investigative, and raw, diverging from a traditional war film aesthetic. My aim was to integrate traditional print media elements with bold color palettes and found footage to evoke a sense of gritty realism and urgency. One of the most reward parts of the process was recreating the A24 logo animation so I could then remix it with the theming of the whole film title sequence.
